Size & taper of Ford tie rod end Howdy, I need to ream the hole of my steering arms so that the tie rod end will come in from the top vs. coming in from the bottom. Someone from another site stated that the taper needed for an early Ford tie rod is 1 1/2" per foot. Here is the problem: I'm not a machinist and I can't find anything that list 1 1/2" per foot of taper. To add to the my challange all of the good machine shops near me have either closed their doors or do not have a tapered reamer. I've located a few (McMaster-Carr & other places) where I can purchase a taper reamer and I just want to make sure that my measurements are correct. It seems like the large part of the taper of the tie rod is 5/8". I measured the hole in the steering arm & the large opening side seems to be 5/8" as well. The specs for the reamers mention Morse size (a 5/8" is Morse 2). What is the Morse size and am I right in thinking that a taper reamer will do what I need it do do? Thank everyone. |
Re: Size & taper of Ford tie rod end an 1 1/2 inch per foot is a 7 degree reamer. Speedway sells them, I'm sure McMaster-Carr also has them. |
Re: Size & taper of Ford tie rod end Paul, Thanks. Tim |
Re: Size & taper of Ford tie rod end So if you taper the small end to 5/8" wont you almost have a 5/8" hole with only a small amount of taper at the newly tapered end and no taper touching at the original large end? |
