Leg room question How much more leg room is there in a model a coupe than there is in a pickup?? I believe that the coupes have a seat fore and aft adjuster whereas the pickup seats have only one position.
Thanks for any input. |
Re: Leg room question I just compared my '29 closed cab to my '29 standard coupe. The top front edge of the seat bottoms were the same at about 9" back from the A pillar. The top front edges of the seat backs were about 1-1/2" different in distance back from the dash rail, 29-1/2" versus 31" for the coupe. Both do not have adjustable seats. That small distance difference for the seat back is significant for improving comfort on a multi hour drive.

Re: Leg room question To say nothing of the wear marks the steering wheel leaves on my shirt. :D

Re: Leg room question In my '30 coupe I cut about an inch and a half off the package tray. That let the seat slide back, and give more room for my 6'4" body. A small move, but it made a noticeable difference.

Re: Leg room question On my '29 Coupe, I determined the former owner had done a poor job on the back seat cushion and had overstuffed it. I took it apart and saw none of the springs had been tied down. I uniformly tied all the springs about 2" and put in new batting on the seat cushion. All totalled I picked up about 2-1/2" of leg room... much better. As a guide, I looked at the interior pictures of all the coupes I could find on ebay and noticed that the bottom of the back seat cushion aligned with the welting on the door. I think it shows on my album pictures on my personal page. Well worth the effort and time involved.

Re: Leg room question I am 6' 4" and I just didn't fit in my Fordor sedan. It wasn't safe either as my leg would get stuck under the steering wheel and I couldn't get to the brake. I made new seat to door post brackets and moved the whole seat back about 2.5 - 3 inches and bent the shifter to the right. It is very comfortable and easy to drive now. A pickup or coupe is nearly impossible to drive for me. There is so much leg room in the back seat of the Fordor that it wasn't a problem for the passengers when I moved the seat back.

On my '30 coupe, I cut 4" from the package tray, drilled out seat riser rivets and moved the WHOLE seat assembly back a full 4," WONDERFUL! and it looked like a factory job. Can't do it on my '29 coupe without butchering it! Took out stock cushions, cut 3/4" plywood panels for back & bottom, covered them with carpet, put piano hinge on front of bottom panel for tool acccess under seat. Mounting 2 curved back bar stool seats, with swivels I found at Bass- Pro Shop! Go'nna look RACY! No alterations to the car at all,and it can be changed back to stock in 10 minutes. Keep watching, as I will be posting pictures.--Bill W. |

Re: Leg room question If I remember correctly, I think there is quite a difference between 28/29 and 30/31.. I think there is more room in the 30/31, but, then again, maybe not..
|
Re: Leg room question What I really remember is that there was a whole lot more room in my Model A's when I was a teen ager than there is now.

Re: Leg room question My friend has a 31 widebed and the seat is very tight as well as uncomfortable because the seat back is so straight. I'll have to check another 31 to compare, but this one just doesn't seem right.

Yes, definately. The curved back of the seat is only about 1 inch thick, which gives you a lot of leg room and it has a nice angle for comfort. The foam filled bottom is about 3 inches thick, so you gain some headroom also. Bill W. |

Re: Leg room question For you 30-31 Pickup guys-
Snyder's makes a set of thinner seat springs that do a world of good increasing leg room. I ordered a set for my early '31 sometime back and while I haven't upholstered them yet, there is a noticeable difference in leg room when compared to the standard/original size springs that were in the truck when I got it. The seat cushion is a bit lower as well. Now my line of sight isn't even with the top of the windshield which is a good thing. |

Re: Leg room question Don't know how I missed this thread before but Bill, that's an idea I'm going to put to use in my 31CCPU. Thanks

Re: Leg room question i sat in a coupe the other day with NO package tray . way more room than you can imagine . my coupe ok for me , but the one with no package tray was amazing !

Re: Leg room question On my tudor, I moved the seat back about 4" on driver's side, next project is to raise it 3-4". Now I have plenty of room.

Re: Leg room question I have a 29 coupe and a 29 pickup and the pickup is alot smaller than the coupe. I am only 5'10 so I fit in both pretty good but I couldn't imagine somebody larger getting in the pickup comfortably.

Re: Leg room question I've got a 31 roadster and just spent the better part of an hour trying to find a way to get in and out of it. I'm 6' 1" and my shoes are 11 1/2" long. Just no way outside of painful contortions can I get my feet through the 9" space between the seat base and the door pillar. Tried putting my foot through the space longways and my leg gets jammed up with the steering wheel.
There's no seat adjustment and I can't see any relatively simple way to move the base reward. Old Henry must have been a very small stature guy. Is there a procedure that's eluding me here?:( Ray |
Re: Leg room question Damn Flat32 you is a big foot. When I got me 31 the fellow gave me a seat adjuster that he got from the fellow that he bought it from now I just a have to figure out how to put it in cause it is a little hard for me's to get me feets in. Not quite as hard as you Flat32 but it is a little uncomfortable getting in but once I get in it is fine.

It's really surprising what a couple of inches will do in the way of legroom/headroom! |
Re: Leg room question I've cut the package trays down for several customer cars and they were amazed how much more
good answer . no one will know ........... it works !! |
Re: Leg room question I had a 31 CCPU & it wasnt too comfortable on a long trip & awkward getting in & out.My 30 coupe, with seat pushed back is easy to get into & very comfy on long drives.I am 6' 2" but skinny and am more comfy in the A than in my modern car.

Re: Leg room question On the '29 coupe, the stock seat overhangs the riser a lot. When I did the new seats, now I have Lots of room from the "A" post to the seat riser to get my feet in and out. With the stock seats, once I slid off the damned seat onto the running board just trying to get my feet out!
I did NO alterations to the car itself, and I didn't do that factory modification to the package tray. Ole' Bill WILL NOT BUTCHER AN "A!" And the seat units can be changed back to stock in 10 minutes!:D (provided you have peed first!) Were folks shorter in '28 & '29 than they were in '30 & '31???? Bill W. |

Re: Leg room question I have a 30 A coupe. I am 5'10 and need the seat to be bit closer. Seems as I am stretching to get the clutch down and get a better angle on the gas. I am not sort legged either. I need to find a thick car seat like we used to have in the older days. They probably still make them.

Re: Leg room question Maybe you ole men are shrinking like dem wimen do when they get older. You know like there mouths open up and dem legs close up. :D Huh Schultz whats are ya talking about theys talking about seats. Ya have  me.

Re: Leg room question Just find a small pillow like the ones you see decorating couches. Just make sure they go well with the interior of your car and you will save yourself a lot of work and money. And it will actually be more comfortable.

Re: Leg room question Flat32, there is a solution to get in and out of your roadster. I had a 29 roadster and I am 6' tall with 40" waist (lots more food last ten years).
My solution: Left foot on running board, slide right foot in, stretch right leg out straight as you twist and slide over the side and under the steering wheel. Grab left leg and pull it into the car. Getting out, just do the reverse. Oh yeah, the top has to be down for me to get in due to back problems. If that doesn't work grease your self up with butter then get a running start and jump in from the back. |
